Seeking paradise

Garbage in Ricky's room

Waking in the gloom, not sure if eyes open or not.

Don’t care.

Cloying stench fills mouth and nostrils; chest aches with every breath, resonating with the intense pain at the back of the skull.

Everything aches. Every movement is bone grinding against bone, pain stabbing deep into flesh, burning in rippling waves; torture.

A ragged gasp of foetid air as the body is pushed up on shaking arms; the room spins sickeningly, empty stomach tensing, ready to vomit last night’s bile.

Eyes dart around, trembling fingers knock aside cigarette boxes, plastic wrappers and cans; searching in vain for succour, for whatever remains of the brown filth that had been next to the needle and spoon.

Seeking paradise
Urgency burns within veins
Just need one more hit

Wow. A very well written, visual and visceral, dive into the mind of a junkie. Good job.

powerful imagery that may be all too real for some. i like your haiku finish.

  3. Powerfully written, very vivid and yes, frightening. 🙂
