“Shoot down any birds that leave this temple” Lieutenant Firedrake commanded her archers, as they got into position a few hundred yards outside the temple walls and notched their bows.  I won’t have any Seraphina missives getting out of Noetica she thought, as she marched over to where her footsoldiers were stampeding towards the heavy temple doors with a battering ram.

The mighty wooden doors crashed open and the soldiers swarmed into the darkness of the building’s interior like ants;  at that moment a flock of birds took flight from the top floors of the temple, breaking off in all directions.

“Fire!” shouted the Lieutenant at the archers, pointing at the sky with her sword.

As one unit the archers raised their weapons and pulled back on their bowstrings; an instant later lowering their weapons and covering their eyes as they were suddenly blinded by a colourful profusion of bright fireworks that lit up the night sky.
