“Cheers!” Elina said as they clinked glasses and took a sip of wine. She draped an elbow over the top of the sofa, as Gary did the same. Elina smiled warmly.
“Nice place you got here.” Gary remarked, glancing about the penthouse apartment. It was well appointed, minimalist, but with expensive looking furniture. There was a great view of the lights of the city from up here.
“Thanks” she responded, looking at him with dilated pupils, then glancing down at her glass and turning it around in her exquisitely manicured fingers.
Gary took a large sip of his wine. “What did you say you do for a living?”
She looked back up at him before returning her gaze to her glass again. “Acquisitions.”
“Oh, right. Yeah, I remember now. Must be a good line of work. You enjoy it?”
Elina smiled. “Yeah, sure, it’s alright. It can be a bit boring sometimes, you know, lots of suits…”
Gary frowned and nodded. “Oh, yeah, I know what you mean. Bunch of know-it-alls, eh?”
She giggled. “Yeah, something like that” she replied, raising her glass to her lips. “Do you want to hear some music?” she asked suddenly, rising from the sofa and walking to a nearby table.
“Sure” Gary said, “what’ve you got?”
“How about something relaxing?” she said, picking up a remote and pushing a button. Some music played from various speakers dotted around the room – ‘Sexual Healing’ by Marvin Gaye.
“Oh, nice choice!” Gary exclaimed, taking a swig from his glass.
She smiled again as she returned to the sofa, sat up against him; he felt blood rushing to his nether-regions.
“I had a really nice time tonight” she said softly, letting her gaze linger for a while. Just long enough, Gary decided.
As he leaned forward to kiss her, Elina’s pupils narrowed; she smiled, mouth parting to reveal two sharp, elongated canine teeth.
As if by alchemy, the atmosphere changed instantly as Gary’s blood froze in his veins.
